Key takeaways

  • Ultherapy and Korean HIFU devices reach deepest (down to 4.5 mm) and suit sagging along the jaw, under the chin and at the brow. Thermage FLX, Oligio X and Sofwave work in the dermis, so they are better for firmness and fine lines.
  • Onda uses microwaves aimed at fat, which makes it a contouring tool. Titanium is a three-wavelength diode laser adapted from hair removal: low pain, little downtime, shorter-lasting results.
  • Seoul listings checked on October 14, 2026 ran from about ₩110,000 for 300 shots of Shurink Universe to about ₩1.8 million to ₩2.2 million for 600 shots of Thermage FLX with VAT. Check whether VAT is included.
  • The 10% VAT refund for foreigners' cosmetic procedures ended at the end of 2025, so budget for the full price.
  • Pregnancy, pacemakers or implants in the treatment area, open wounds and active acne rule out or limit several of these devices. Tell the doctor about fillers too.

If you want Korean lifting treatments compared before you book, here is the short version. Ultherapy and Korean HIFU devices focus ultrasound into deeper layers, Thermage FLX and Oligio X heat the skin with radiofrequency, Sofwave heats a thin band about 1.5 mm down, Onda uses microwaves aimed at fat, and "Titanium" is a three-wavelength diode laser first built for hair removal. In Seoul, listed prices run from about ₩110,000 for 300 shots of Korean HIFU to around ₩2 million for Thermage FLX, based on clinic and booking-platform listings we checked on October 14, 2026. You walk out the same day after any of them, though the deeper devices can leave swelling, tenderness or bruising for days, occasionally up to two weeks.

Below, the seven options sit side by side. Then each gets its own section: what it is, who makes it, what regulators actually cleared it for, what it costs in Seoul, and who should skip it.

Prices come from the listings in the price table further down. Pain ratings draw on maker labeling, a published study for Sofwave, and the 1-to-5 scores in Korean booking platform Gangnam Unni's Titanium lifting guide, which gives Ultherapy and Thermage a 5 and Onda and Titanium a 1. The "results last" column is mostly what manufacturers claim, not independent long-term data.

How do these devices actually differ?

All of them heat tissue so that existing collagen contracts and new collagen forms over the following weeks. What changes is the type of energy and where it lands.

  • Focused ultrasound (Ultherapy, Shurink Universe, Doublo) converges energy into small points under the surface. Ultherapy's deepest transducer works at 4.5 mm, which Merz describes as the SMAS and platysma layer.
  • Parallel-beam ultrasound (Sofwave) heats cylinder-shaped zones in the mid-dermis instead of a deep point, with built-in cooling and skin-temperature monitoring.
  • Monopolar radiofrequency (Thermage FLX, Oligio X) heats a broad volume of dermis through a tip that cools the skin surface.
  • Microwaves (Onda) at 2.45 GHz are, in DEKA's words, aimed to selectively target fat cells.
  • Diode laser light (Titanium) fires three wavelengths at once from a machine Korean dermatologists adapted from hair removal.

What is Ultherapy (Ulthera Prime), and who is it for?

Ultherapy is Merz Aesthetics' micro-focused ultrasound system; the current model is Ultherapy PRIME, which Korean clinics often list as Ulthera Prime. Its defining feature is real-time imaging: the operator sees the tissue layers on screen while treating. Transducers work at 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm, and the imaging can see down to 8 mm, according to the Instructions for Use.

The US FDA has cleared the system to lift the eyebrow, lift lax tissue under the chin and on the neck, improve lines on the décolleté, and improve skin laxity on the abdomen, arms and knees (IFU). Seoul clinics sell it by shot count, usually 100, 300 or 600 shots.

A session takes roughly 30 to 90 minutes depending on the area, and results build over 2 to 3 months (Healthline). Merz says facial results can last a year or more. It is one of the more painful options here, which is why clinics apply numbing cream first; one Gangnam clinic leaves it on for 30 to 40 minutes.

It fits best when the problem is early sagging along the jawline, under the chin or at the brow, where the deeper settings matter. For prices and shot counts, see our Ultherapy in Korea price guide and the Ultherapy ranking.

Is HIFU in Korea the same as Ultherapy?

Not exactly. HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is the category, and Ultherapy is one brand in it. Korean clinics also run domestic HIFU machines that cost far less per shot.

The best known is Shurink Universe, made by Classys and sold abroad as Ultraformer MPT. Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) approved it in October 2021, and its face cartridges work at 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.5 mm. Hironic, another Korean company, makes the Doublo line; its newer New Doublo 2.0 combines HIFU with radiofrequency.

The depths overlap with Ultherapy, so what is different? Merz markets Ultherapy PRIME as the only FDA-cleared lifting device with real-time imaging (ultherapy.com), while the Classys product page makes no imaging claim. Price is the other gap: 300 shots of Shurink Universe were listed at ₩110,000 to ₩275,000 at Gangnam clinics, against ₩1.29 million and up for 300 shots of Ultherapy Prime. Some clinics pair a smaller number of Ultherapy shots with a Korean HIFU device to keep costs down, as one Creatrip guide describes.

Ultherapy vs Thermage: which one fits your face?

Thermage FLX is Solta Medical's monopolar radiofrequency system. The FDA cleared it in October 2017 to smooth skin on the face, eyes and body, and Solta describes a uniform heating effect in the deep collagen-rich layers of the skin, plus a vibrating handpiece for comfort. Its current labeling covers wrinkles, including around the eyes and on the upper and lower eyelids (thermage.com).

The practical differences:

  • Job. Ultherapy places energy at fixed depths down to 4.5 mm and is cleared for lifting the brow, chin and neck. Thermage heats the dermis more broadly and is cleared for wrinkles. Put simply, Ultherapy is the lifting tool for specific heavy spots; Thermage is for firmer, smoother skin overall, eyelids included.
  • Timeline. Solta says Thermage results appear gradually over 2 to 6 months after one session and can last 1 to 2 years depending on skin and age. Ultherapy results show over 2 to 3 months.
  • Session and downtime. Most Thermage treatments take 30 to 60 minutes. Redness usually goes within 24 hours, and swelling usually settles within 5 days but can last several weeks.
  • Price in Seoul. In our Thermage guide, 600 shots of Thermage FLX cost ₩1.79 million to ₩2.19 million with VAT across six Seoul clinics, against ₩979,000 to ₩1.98 million for 300 shots of Ultherapy PRIME in our Ultherapy guide. Both checked October 14, 2026.

Many Seoul clinics sell the two together (see combinations below). Our Thermage cost in Seoul guide and the Thermage FLX ranking go deeper on price.

What is Oligio X, Korea's answer to Thermage?

Oligio is a 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency device from Korean maker Wontech. Korean clinic guides often call it the "Korean version of Thermage" and pitch it as the cheaper option. Oligio X is the newer model. Here is what we could verify about what the X adds:

  • The FDA cleared Oligio X in January 2025 (510(k) K243929). Its summary describes impedance-matching technology for consistent energy delivery and a newly added cooling-gas accessory. The original Oligio was cleared in October 2022 (K221989). Both clearances are worded for electrocoagulation and hemostasis of soft tissue, not for lifting as such.
  • Marketing describes a two-mode "GXG" treatment: G mode heats the upper dermis broadly, and X mode sends energy deeper into the dermis and fat in the same session (Jane Yoo MD). We found no published trial comparing Oligio X with Thermage FLX.

The same source describes a warm sensation with no numbing needed and mild redness that fades within a few hours. In Seoul, Oligio X is sold by shots. One Hongdae clinic listed 300 shots at ₩550,000 including VAT, well under the Thermage FLX starting prices above. Gangnam listings for the X model were thin when we checked.

What is Sofwave, and why is it sold as the gentle option?

Sofwave, from Israel's Sofwave Medical, uses SUPERB (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam) technology. Its parallel beams heat the mid-dermis at about 1.5 mm rather than converging on a deep point, and the handpiece cools the surface as it works (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2025).

The FDA first cleared it to improve facial lines and wrinkles, and in 2021 added lifting of the eyebrow and lax tissue under the chin and on the neck. Later clearances cover short-term improvement in the look of cellulite, acne scars and upper-arm laxity (Sofwave safety information).

According to the Sofwave FAQs, most treatments take 30 to 45 minutes, most people need one session, some improvement can show within a week, and fuller results develop over about 12 weeks. Mild redness or swelling usually fades within a few hours. In a 2025 study of Asian patients treated for acne scars, average pain was 3.94 on a 0-to-10 scale.

Sofwave in Korea is priced per shot. At Gangnam clinics, 100 shots ran from ₩759,000 (event price, VAT included) to ₩990,000 (VAT excluded). It suits fine lines, crepey texture and early laxity for people who want little downtime. Because it stays shallow, it does not do the same job as Ultherapy's 4.5 mm setting.

What is Onda lifting in Korea?

Onda is made by DEKA, part of Italy's El.En. group. Its Coolwaves are 2.45 GHz microwaves that DEKA says target fat cells and also shrink collagen fibers in the dermis. The current Onda Pro has three handpieces: Deep, Shallow and a newer Pocket handpiece that DEKA lists as best for lifting, firming and the submental area. Gangnam Unni's Onda guide describes Korean face treatments with a 3 mm handpiece for elasticity and a 7 mm handpiece for fat and contour.

On regulation, we did not find an FDA clearance for facial lifting with Onda. Its North American distributor announced the Onda Pro launch in April 2026 to contour and improve the appearance of cellulite. A 2024 international advisory board paper covered cellulite and localized fat and excluded the head and neck with the standard handpieces, except the area under the chin. The evidence for faces is thinner than for Ultherapy, Thermage or Sofwave.

Onda lifting in Korea is sold by energy in kilojoules (kJ). Gangnam Unni's app-wide averages in January 2026 were ₩330,000 for 60 kJ (a full face) and ₩500,000 for 100 kJ. Pain is mostly warmth. The same guide suggests three or more sessions 2 to 4 weeks apart, with visible change from about 2 to 4 weeks, and tells people with hollow cheeks or little facial fat to discuss the 7 mm handpiece carefully. Compare clinics on our Onda lifting ranking.

What is Titanium lifting in Seoul?

On a Seoul menu, "Titanium" means Alma Lasers' Soprano Titanium, a diode laser that fires 755, 810 and 1064 nm at the same time. It was invented for hair removal. Korean dermatologists built a lifting protocol around it, and Alma Korea took the "Titanium Lifting" trademark in Korea in September 2022 (Korea Daily). The device's FDA clearance from February 2023 covers hair removal and coagulation, not skin lifting.

Clinics typically combine a hair-removal-style mode (HR or SHR) over the whole face with a stacked mode (STACK) on the areas that need contouring (ELLE Singapore).

Titanium lifting in Seoul is priced by kJ. At one Gangnam Station clinic, 40 kJ was ₩385,000 and 80 kJ ₩660,000 (event prices, VAT included), with a session time of about 20 minutes. Gangnam Unni describes "virtually no downtime" and suggests 2 to 3 sessions 3 to 4 weeks apart, with results lasting about 2 to 3 months and sometimes 6 months or more. That makes it popular as a quick refresh before an event. It is not a replacement for deeper lifting.

A few notes on reading this table. "Event" prices on Gangnam Unni are discounted promotions, often limited to a first visit; the regular list price is in brackets. Reberry Clinic's prices exclude the 10% VAT. Creatrip labels DayBeau Clinic's figures as estimates and does not say whether VAT is in. None of the listings showed an end date, so treat the table as a snapshot from October 14, 2026.

In US dollars, at ₩1,340.4 per dollar (Seoul market rate on October 7, 2026, per SBS Biz): ₩1,290,000 for 300 shots of Ultherapy Prime is about $962 before VAT, ₩990,000 for 100 shots of Sofwave is about $739, ₩385,000 for 40 kJ of Titanium is about $287, and ₩110,000 for 300 shots of Shurink Universe is about $82.

VAT refund: the scheme that let foreign patients reclaim the 10% VAT on cosmetic and dermatology procedures, skin lifting included, expired at the end of 2025. A bill to restore it through December 31, 2027 was sent to a National Assembly subcommittee on July 29, 2026 (Hankyung). Unless it passes, budget for the VAT-inclusive price.

Which lifting treatment should you choose for your concern?

No device wins across the board. The right one depends on what is sagging and how much downtime you can live with. Use this as a starting point for the consultation, not a prescription:

  • Sagging jawline, jowls or neck. Ultherapy is cleared for lifting under the chin and on the neck, and its 4.5 mm setting is the deepest here. Korean HIFU is the budget version of the same idea. Sofwave is also cleared for submental and neck lifting, at a shallower depth.
  • Double chin or a heavy lower face. Onda targets fat, and DEKA lists its Pocket handpiece for the submental area. This is contouring more than tightening.
  • Fine lines, crepey skin, eyelids. Thermage FLX is cleared for wrinkles, including the upper and lower eyelids. Sofwave is cleared for facial lines and wrinkles. Oligio X is the lower-cost radiofrequency option.
  • Low pain tolerance. Onda and Titanium get Gangnam Unni's lowest pain score, and Sofwave averaged under 4 out of 10 in one study. Ultherapy and Thermage score highest.
  • Thin face or hollow cheeks. Be careful with anything aimed at fat. Gangnam Unni flags Onda's 7 mm handpiece for this group, and Merz's post-market safety list for Ultherapy includes fat and volume loss.
  • Short trip of three to five days. Titanium, Sofwave and Oligio X carry the least downtime. With Ultherapy, allow for bruising that Merz says typically clears within 2 days to 2 weeks.

Can you combine treatments in one visit?

Yes, and Seoul clinics sell combinations as packages. Three that appear in published listings:

  • Ultherapy + Thermage on the same day. One Gangnam clinic describes Ultherapy first for the SMAS, then Thermage FLX for the dermis, with the combined treatment taking about 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Onda + Titanium. One Gangnam clinic sells 40 kJ of each as an 80 kJ combo from ₩680,000 before VAT.
  • Korean HIFU + Oligio X. A Gangnam clinic lists a Shurink Universe and Oligio X package on travel platform WAUG.

Combinations are easier at clinics that keep several devices under one roof. One example is UH CELL Clinic (our partner clinic) in Gangnam, which lists Ultherapy PRIME, Thermage FLX, Sofwave, Oligio X, Onda and Titanium on its English site.

If you have fillers, say so. Merz advises against Ultherapy energy directly over dermal fillers, Sofwave lists the same precaution for its device, and Gangnam Unni suggests spacing Onda 2 to 4 weeks from filler or Botox.

How do you check you're getting the real device?

Brand names get borrowed, so ask three things: the exact device and model, how many shots or kJ you are paying for, and whether you can see the sealed tip or cartridge opened. For Ultherapy, Merz Aesthetics Korea launched an NFC check in March 2026: tapping a phone on the chip on the Ultherapy PRIME machine verifies the device, and a QR code on the transducer verifies the tip (Dailypharm). For "Titanium", ask whether it is Alma's Soprano Titanium. Our guide to choosing a Gangnam clinic covers the rest of the checklist.

How many days do you need in Seoul?

None of these needs a hospital stay, and most people can go back to sightseeing the same day. Timing is the bigger issue. Final results take weeks to months (about 12 weeks for Sofwave, 2 to 3 months for Ultherapy, 2 to 6 months for Thermage), so you will not see the full effect before you fly home.

Book the treatment early in your stay rather than the day before your flight. That leaves time to go back to the clinic if swelling, bruising or a burn needs a look. For Ultherapy, Thermage or a strong Onda session, a buffer of several days is sensible. Titanium and Sofwave fit more easily into a short stay.

What are the risks, and who should avoid each treatment?

Two points apply to every device. Results vary from person to person, and none of these treatments guarantees a lift. And the operator matters: Merz's own labeling links burns and scarring to incorrect technique such as tilting the transducer or wrong line spacing.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Ultherapy or Thermage?

Neither is better for everyone. Ultherapy focuses ultrasound at set depths down to 4.5 mm and is FDA-cleared to lift the brow and lax tissue under the chin and on the neck, so it suits early sagging. Thermage FLX heats the dermis with radiofrequency and is cleared for wrinkles, including on the eyelids, so it suits crepey or loose skin overall. Many Seoul clinics offer both in one visit.

What is the least painful lifting treatment in Korea?

Onda and Titanium lifting are usually described as the gentlest. Korean booking platform Gangnam Unni rates both 1 out of 5 for pain, against 5 for Ultherapy and Thermage. Sofwave averaged 3.94 out of 10 for pain in a 2025 study. Energy settings and numbing cream change how it feels.

How much do lifting treatments cost in Seoul in 2026?

Listings checked on October 14, 2026 ranged from about ₩110,000 for 300 shots of Shurink Universe (a Korean HIFU device) to about ₩1.8 million to ₩2.2 million for 600 shots of Thermage FLX with VAT. Ultherapy PRIME ran ₩979,000 to ₩1.98 million for 300 shots with VAT included across eight Seoul listings, and Sofwave cost ₩759,000 to ₩990,000 for 100 shots. Prices change often, and some listings include VAT while others do not.

Is Sofwave better than Ultherapy?

They do different jobs. Sofwave heats the mid-dermis at about 1.5 mm with parallel ultrasound beams and targets fine lines, texture and mild laxity with little downtime. Ultherapy reaches 4.5 mm for deeper lifting but is more painful and can bruise. Both are FDA-cleared to lift the brow and lax tissue under the chin and on the neck.

What is Oligio X, and is it the same as Thermage?

Oligio X is a 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency device from Korean maker Wontech, often sold in Korea as a lower-cost alternative to Thermage FLX. Both heat the dermis with radiofrequency, but they are different machines from different companies. We found no published trial comparing the two directly.

Is Titanium lifting a laser treatment?

Yes. It uses Alma Lasers' Soprano Titanium, a diode laser that fires 755, 810 and 1064 nm at the same time. The device was designed for hair removal, and its 2023 FDA clearance covers hair removal and coagulation, not lifting. Korean clinics use it for quick tightening with little downtime.

Can foreigners get a VAT refund on lifting treatments in Korea in 2026?

Not under the old scheme. The refund of 10% VAT on foreign patients' cosmetic and dermatology procedures ended at the end of 2025. A bill to restore it through December 31, 2027 was referred to a National Assembly subcommittee in July 2026, so check its status before you budget.
